figurative painting process

Creating my figurative art is always an adventure, and this time, it's no different. Working on a 24"x30" oil on canvas piece, I decided to switch up my technique a bit. Typically, I begin by covering my canvas with a thin layer of paint. However, for this project, I embraced a new approach by painting with oil over acrylic. I sometimes use this method on landscapes. It's fascinating how a simple change in method can spark a whole new wave of creativity, adding an element of spontaneity to the familiar rhythm of my artistic expression.

Creating wildlife art is truly a calming and fulfilling endeavor for me. Currently, I'm immersed in the world of painting this on a 20"x24" canvas - a Sri Lankan leopard and her playful cub portrayed using rich oils. The intricate details and lifelike quality of wildlife paintings require a patient layering process, bringing each stroke closer to resembling the vibrant life found in nature. The particular Sri Lankan leopard, known as 'Panthera Pardus Kotiya,' holds a special place in my heart as I've been lucky enough to witness these majestic creatures frolicking in my garden by cover of night. It's this intimate connection with wildlife that truly inspires and drives my creative process, capturing the essence and beauty of these incredible animals in every brushstroke.

Portraits are a timeless art form that captures the essence of individuals through careful observation and skillful technique. As an artist, my preferred medium for creating portraits is painting with oils on canvas. This classic approach allows for deep, rich colors and intricate details that bring the subject to life. When working on portraits, I find that the wet-on-wet method is particularly advantageous for achieving smooth blends and a sense of depth. By applying layers of paint while the previous layer is still wet, I can seamlessly merge colors and textures, resulting in a realistic and captivating representation of the individual I am portraying. The technique not only simplifies the blending process but also adds a sense of spontaneity and fluidity to the final piece, capturing the subject's essence with precision and finesse.
